For the Camp PolyHacks 2019 Hackathon, the challenge was to ideate a solution to a problem facing the local community. My team and I focused on inclusivity. We designed a mobile application called "Wheelway" in order to offer a resource with communication and mapping tools that was inclusive and useful for individuals with disabilities.
PROBLEM
We recognized that not all infrastructure today is accessible to people with limited physical abilities, which could make navigating physical spaces difficult for them.
During our brainstorming session, we were inspired by apps like Waze, Google Maps, and Yelp. The goal was to help disabled individuals navigate their locations more easily.
Product
Our final prototype is an app where users can search for places, write and read reviews, get directions, and flag areas that are dangerous for physically impaired individuals.
The maps feature provided directions and highlighted areas of concern using three different-colored symbols of wheelchairs where users can also flag an area in order to notify others using that route.
Because inclusivity was our focus, it was important to create a space where users can share their thoughts on places. Through the review feature, users could contribute and read reviews based on the accessibility of a place.
